Frank J. Salpino Jr. 82, Gallitzin died February 19, 2019 at home surrounded by family. Born October 13, 1936 in Baltimore, MD son of the late Frank J. Sr. and Eileen (Burke) Salpino. Survived by his wife the former Colleen Fels whom he married November 22, 1958 at St. Patrick Catholic Church and children, Frank III (Dianne) - Burnham, PA, Michael – Eugene, OR, Renee – Frederick, MD, step sisters Tammy Giordano and Tina Salpino and grandsons, Ross and Victor and numerous relatives. Frank retired in 1993 from Penn Cambria School District as a Health/Physical Education Teacher. During his tenure, he was the Head Baseball Coach for fifteen years, Head Basketball Coach for seven years and Head Football Coach for two years. A 1954 graduate of Gallitzin High, A BS Degree from Slippery Rock and a Masters Equivalent from Penn State. A member of the National Education Association, PSERS and the Cesare Battisti Club, Altoona. He was First Assistant Coach for the St. Francis University Club Football Team beginning in 1969 and coached four years. He was honored last year for his accomplishments and was to be honored in September for the 50th anniversary of the team. Frank was a Yankee fan and enjoyed attending their spring training in Florida. He loved traveling by train with his Dad to the Bronx for games and attended many other sporting events. He was always centered around sports and focused on physical fitness. Friends will be received from 8:30am until 10:30 am Friday March 8, 2019 at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church Street, Gallitzin. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am Friday March 8th at St. Demetrius Church, Gallitzin the Rev. Albert Ledoux, celebrant. Committal will be in Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
