Joseph A. “Harky” Harkabus 95, Gallitzin died December 11, 2022, at Forest Hill Personal Care Home, Sidman. Born December 29, 1926, in Lilly the son of the late Joseph F. and Mary (Konstz) Harkabus. Preceded in death by his wife the former Helen A. Petyak on November 18, 2010, daughter Eileen on October 9, 2010, infant brother Tommie, brother Francis, sisters Dorothy, Anna Stoltz, Josephine Lestock and Bernadine Buchinski. Survived by sisters, Mary Strank, Gertrude Leap, and Judith Smith and numerous nieces and nephews. Harky worked for Veeder Root as a tool and die maker and retired in 1989 with 32 years’ service. Harky served in the Navy during World War II. Life member of Sankertown VFW, member of Gallitzin American Legion, Gallitzin Sportsmen’s, and Slovak Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, watching Pirates baseball and football. Member of St. Demetrius Catholic Church, Gallitzin where funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Monday December 19th the Rev. Albert Ledoux celebrant. Committal ST. Brigid Cemetery, Lilly. Friends will be received from 5 to 8 pm Sunday December 18th at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church Street, Gallitzin where a vigil service will be held Sunday. Military Rites by Sankertown VFW, Gallitzin American Legion and other local military organizations.
